Stressful Driving

Stressful Driving

Driving is both predictable and unpredictable and that's why it can be such a stressful event.

Did someone just cut over into my lane? "Hey, that is my lane how dare you!" "I don't make any mistake behind the wheel. Everyone else does!" "It was not my fault, it was their fault!" Sound familiar? Sure it does since it happens to all of us. The problem is stress can dramatically impact our ability to drive safely.

So, the next time you get stressed behind the wheel, try some of these things:

  • Take a break. Pull over into a safe location and relax for a minute or two. That amount of time is not going to impact your total commute.
  • Listen to some music. Something instrumental or soothing to listen to.
  • Practice some deep breathing exercises and bring your heart rate down just a bit.
  • Chew a piece of gum. That's right. There is some research out there that claims chewing gum has a calming effect on the brain.
